Creating Your Life Goals with Big Hairy Audacious Goal Setting (BHAG)!

Setting Goals

Your Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG)

Think big! Aim high!

If you set your goal as something feasible, something achievable, you may “hit it” easier and succeed.

However, it you set your goal HIGH - you will push harder, run faster, accept no less, and achieve so much more.

This is your personal Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG).

(I like to call it my Big Hairy-Ass Goal! I seem to remember this easier!)

The point is to focus on the BIG picture. This not a short-term goal that you achieve and then say, “Next!”

These are the long-term goals that give life-force and meaning to your small daily actions.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. ~ Lao Tzu

By having a BIG goal you need to give a consistent commitment to your life goals. These are bigger and bolder than your other goals.

A BHAG changes your mindset.

You now commit to doing things differently so that you can achieve something greater. You now begin life-changing processes to achieve this BHAG.

How?

  1. Conceptualize
  2. Test
  3. Commit

Conceptualize Your Big Hairy Audacious Goal

Think long-term and life-changing.

Give yourself a timeline with a minimum of 5-10 years to work through your process.

Outline what actions you must take to achieve this.

Focus on exciting and invigorating BHAGs which inspire you daily.

Remember, creating this goal is life-changing. So...

What do you want to change most?

Test Your Big Hairy Audacious Goal

Is this something you can commit to?

Is the goal clear and defined?

Are you motivated to achieve this?

Outline the milestones you will need to achieve along your path.

Outline the individual strategies you will to implement to reach each milestone.

Commit to Your Big Hairy Audacious Goal

Write it down.

Make it real.

  • Break it down into steps.
  • Create an aggressive timeline!
  • Outline your methods to achieving this.
  • Envision life after having achieved this goal.
  • Focus.
  • Post your goal where you can see it.
  • Be inspired by it!

Extra Bonus:

Achievements are very fleeting in terms of how they make you feel. Real BHAG people are kind of lost without the thing that pushes them, the thing they can throw themselves into. It provides an organizing construct for their lives. You wake up every single morning and get out of bed and it’s standing in the corner with large, furry feet and big glowing eyes--the BHAG. You go to bed at night and just before you close your eyes you see there in the corner with large, furry feet and big glowing eyes--the BHAG. It lives with you.” - Jim Collins
