Inspiring Self-Motivation

Getting More Involved in Your Routine

Why do I get out of bed in the morning? Have you ever asked yourself that question?

The desire to change can only come from within. Normally, it comes from being beaten or being pushed into changing. But what if you could encourage yourself to change without it being a dire necessity?

Motivation is the key to change. Motivation is the key to staying on your path. Motivation is the key to getting work done.

But where does one find motivation? Is it hiding under a rock? Is it in the frozen food section?

For some, motivation is a cup of coffee. It can be a deadline, a dream, or just a task that needs to be checked off the list.

Motivational Techniques

Here are some great motivation techniques:

-Listen to music

-Get excited about the end result

-Find some inspirational quotes or motivation https://www.reddit.com/r/GetMotivated/

-Post about your goal and self-actualizing it

-Reaffirm daily

-Get an "accountabilibuddy" and use them when you need to be reminded of what you are trying to achieve

- Think about the positive and the possibilities, not the negative and difficulties

- Get yourself a mantra- say it at least once a day. “The second best day to start investing is today”

- Remind yourself of peak moments that you have accomplished, for example the day you graduated, got your first job, saved your first $100, lost those 20 lbs, etc.

- Give yourself a small win, especially if you feel like you are in a failure cycle. Sometimes this just starts with getting up and making your bed in the morning.

Stealing Motivation from Yourself

Things that steal motivation:

  • Demotivation is a category of problems containing many variations
  • Demotivation is about not fully committing to act, and there are many reasons why you might be in that position.

Having more ways to categorize your demotivation will help you identify the real reasons for your unwillingness move forward.

  • #1 Fear - You can challenge your fears by listing them and talking through the various scenarios
  • #2 You aren’t staying true to what you want - Check in with yourself to make sure that your goals align with you and what you really want instead of what you think society expects of you
  • #3 Lack of clarity - Make sure that you clearly outline what you want! Then you can start taking small steps towards achieving your goal
  • #4 Values conflict - Are you struggling to move forward because of a fork in the road? Write out the 2 paths and what can be achieved on each path. Try to isolate which one seems more emotionally pleasing to you OR which path is more aligned with your long-term plan
  • #5 Not having enough autonomy or room to move - If you want to create something new, but feel like your not getting enough autonomy, then you need to ask for less oversight
  • #6 Insufficient challenge - The challenge can be too great and feel intimidating or you can have too small of a challenge and never get emotionally involved.
  • #7 Grief - If you have recently experienced massive change, you may need to give yourself space, time, and love before trying to get motivated to take on some projects.
  • #8 Loneliness - If you are a social person and have been isolated or working from home, it might be advantageous to start planning more social events.
  • #9 Exhaustion - When you are over-stressed and not taking good care of yourself it’s easy for you to burnout and not have any motivation for anything but sleep. Make sure that you rest up, and then try to plan for a more sustainable way to achieve your goals without getting burnt out.
  • #10 Unclear path - South Park sock fairies. If you can see the future, but you aren’t sure how to get there, be sure to go back to your S.M.A.R.T goals. Create enough steps to be confident in your path forward

Motivation Using Your Emotions

#1 - Being Happy and Optimistic. It's very easy to get unmotivated when you are feeling down and in a bad mood. Finding emotional, positive meaning in your work is what makes the work worth doing.

#2 - Being Rewarded. I wouldn’t offer yourself a chocolate bar every time your credit score went up, but you need to have certain milestone incentives that celebrate your accomplishments. It’s easy to let your progress and change go by if you don’t celebrate it, especially when it comes to physical changes. Also, consider applying penalties if you don't achieve your goals. If you have chores to do, give your friend/roommate your cell phone until they are accomplished.

#3 - Peer pressure. Get your friends to support you in your goals, and tease you for your bad habits (smoking in Antigua story). Make sure that the friends that you have support who you want to be. Change up some friendships to align more with your goals.
